JULY 2020

Last month, I finally finished and released the long-awaited cinematic music video for Leo Brouwer’s Danza del altiplano (“Dance of the High Plains”), so I decided to SEND the video to LEO BROUWER himself! This was after sharing it to and being rejected by multiple online communities such as r/classicalguitar and r/classicalmusic on Reddit who said my video was not allowed because the music was performed on an unacceptable guitar; after my professor laughed in my face years ago when I suggested that, perhaps, classical guitar music could be performed on steel-string guitars; and after classmates from music school smirked and sneered at my creative endeavors.

Well, today, I received a minute of encouragement that obliterates any doubt I’ve ever felt or received and validates all the work I’ve put into this project when Maestro Brouwer himself sent me a personal message congratulating me on my work and interpretation of his famous composition for guitar. I am only sharing it here with you and some close friends because I want to keep his personal message somewhat personal but am too excited to keep it private!

JUNE 2020

Hot on the heels of the release of my magnus opus, a blooper reel just for my friends featuring my best friends. Enjoy!

May 2020

This month, I reveal another track from my upcoming debut album, Prelude. My approach to recording this album is to record all the guitar parts first, and then add all the magical touches—reverb, compression and mastering—at the end. So, as I continue to post these “untouched” recordings, keep in mind that they will sound bare and perhaps dull, like an unedited portrait photo. That said, I am proud to share my recording of the very famous Manha de carnaval (“Morning of Carnival”). This song was written for the 1959 Brazilian film, Orfeu Negro (“Black Orpheus”), which is itself a retelling of the Ancient Greek myth of Orpheus set in modern day Brazil during the time of Carnaval do Brasil (“The Carnival of Brazil”). I will save a more detailed explanation of the film, music and composer for a future blog. In the meantime, please enjoy Manha de carnaval!

Many years ago, when I was fresh-faced young lad immersed in my classical guitar studies, I had the honor of performing this song with my extremely talented friend, Gary Fowler. Here is the video from that concert.

APRIL 2020

A sneak preview of a short edit for my upcoming cinematic music video, “Dance of the High Plains.”

I’d also like to share my first steps in the recording of my upcoming album, Prelude. This piece was originally a Mexican folk-song composed for voice and piano by Manuel Ponce as Por ti mi corazón in 1912. In 1925, Ponce arranged the song for the solo classical guitar. Today, I present to you the first version to ever be recorded on the electric guitar.

mARCH 2020 - tHE cATHEDRAL

A demo recording of the first two movements of Barrios’ La catedral. This piece has inspired my new character, The Count, which will hopefully make an appearance in a future cinematic music video. In the meantime, check out these concept photos we took last weekend at the Jean Dry Lake Bed. Let me know what you think and if you’d like to see a music video with The Count…
